North Carolina Tar Heels vs. Duke Blue Devils

The Tar Heels and Blue Devils enter the first of two regular-season showdowns unranked in the AP Top 25. That’s the first time that has happened since February 1960. For the last 153 games between the two ACC powers, at least one of the teams has been ranked, and usually both.
In the history of the rivalry, since the AP started ranking teams in 1949, the game has featured the No. 1 team in the nation twice as often as it’s had two unranked teams (28 times to 14).
Both Carolina and Duke enter the game coming off of losses—Duke at Miami on Monday and UNC at Clemson on Tuesday. It’s the first time both teams are unranked and coming off a loss since December 1950. Roy Williams was an infant. Mike Krzyzewski was three years old.
Over the years, the seasons when one of the teams was down, that often produced some of the most memorable games. Jeff Capel’s halfcourt buzzer beater to send the game to overtime? That was in Duke’s last losing season—1995. Carolina scoring eight points in 11 seconds to pull out a win on a Walter Davis miracle shot? Duke was 10-16 that season—1974. And last year, when Duke won a double-buzzer beater game—one to tie in regulation and one to win in overtime—was during North Carolina’s worst season in nearly two decades.

Like much of America, the Tar Heels couldn’t wait for 2020 to be over. Following a 14-19 record last year, Carolina stood at 5-4, 0-2 in the ACC when the calendar page flipped to 2021.
The Heels seem to have righted the ship somewhat in January, winning three straight to open the new year before losing at Florida. Another three straight wins followed before they laid an egg at Clemson, losing by 13 while scoring a season-low 50 points.
Carolina is playing six freshmen and a seventh redshirt freshman in their 11-man rotation, and the inexperience has shown. The Heels have struggled with turnovers, including a 26 percent rate against Clemson. They’ve also had trouble hitting shots, ranking No. 294 in the nation in three-point accuracy.
What Carolina does well is rebound and score inside, thanks to a pair of big men in senior Garrison Brooks and sophomore Armando Bacot, with two highly touted freshmen—Day’Ron Sharpe and Walker Kessler—backing them up.

The Blue Devils are also playing six freshmen and have been inconsistent. Duke lost three straight before seeming to correct course with a pair of home wins. The trip to Miami, where the Blue Devils seemed to sleepwalk in a loss to the lowly Hurricanes, sent them back to square one, however. Coach Mike Krzyzewski called the team “soft” after the loss and said they weren’t playing Duke basketball.

The players have vowed not to get “punked” by North Carolina, so look for the Blue Devils to come out physical against the bigger Tar Heels.
Duke has one of the ACC’s best scorers in Matthew Hurt, who can hit from outside and put the ball on the floor to score on the drive. Slasher Jalen Johnson is their next best scoring option, and rookie guard DJ Steward gives Duke a third option.
The Pick
The game will match Carolina’s size against Duke’s driving, slashing attack. Duke has an advantage on the perimeter and will try to pull UNC’s bigs outside by hitting from three against Carolina’s No. 260 rated perimeter defense.
The Blue Devils have also experimented with a zone defense to cover up the team’s struggles on that end of the floor. That twist might make it tougher for the Tar Heels to complete passes into the post and tempt them to rely on outside shooting.
Psychologically, Coach K always seems to have his team ready for this game. For your best bets, look for Duke’s players to come out on fire after a rough week of practices and show that they’re not soft.
